Any short text: a website URL, a wifi login (WIFI:T:WPA;S:MyNet;P:secret;;), an email (mailto:hi@example.com), a phone number, an event, or a plain message. Longer text produces a denser QR — keep it under a few hundred characters for reliable scanning.
A higher level (Q or H) makes the code scannable even when part of it is covered by a logo or damaged, at the cost of a busier pattern. Use L or M for plain printed codes, H for codes printed on curved or textured surfaces.
